KCSE Grade Required to Pursue Computer Science in Kenya

Computer Science degree is one of the best degree programs to pursue in Kenya. The course is popular and will continue to be marketable because the world has become digital, thus requiring programmers, software developers and individuals who can develop apps.

The course is offered at the University of Nairobi, JKUAT,Moi University and many other universities in Kenya. Though each university require varying KCSE grades, the minimum score should be C+ aggregate with at least a C+ in Mathematics and Physics.

You can decide to pursue the course as a parallel student or regular student, but for you to be admitted for a regular program, you have to score at least B+ in KCSE and a B plain in Mathematics. Parallel students are required to present result slip with aggregate KCSE grade of C+.

The following are admission requirements to various universities in Kenya.

AT JKUAT THESE ARE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

BSc. Computer Science

The course emphasizes the architecture of both the hardware and software, converting a typical Computer from a box of electronics into a sophisticated information processing tool. It focuses on the ways in which computer hardware and software are constructed, and provide an insight into the purpose of each of the major computing systems.

Admission Requirements
KCSE mean grade A (plain) and an average grade of A- (minus) in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI THESE ARE THE MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Candidates must satisfy the University’s general admission criteria for undergraduate programmes.

 

  1. Eligibility for consideration for admission into the degree of Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at the School of Computing & Informatics shall be governed by the following minimum admission requirements or an equivalent qualification recognized by Senate:

KCSE: A holder of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum aggregate performance of C+. In addition candidates must have obtained a minimum grade of C+ in four subjects as shown below:

  1. Alternative A: Mathematics, Physics, A 2nd Group II subject or Any from Group III, Any Group II or Group III or Group IV or Group V.
  1. Alternative B: Mathematics, Physical Sciences, A 2nd Group III subject or Any from Group III, Any Group II or Group III or Group IV or Group V.

A-Level: A holder of Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) with 2 principal passes, one of which must be in Mathematics or Physics, and a subsidiary pass with a Credit pass in Physics at ’O’ level.

Diploma in Computer Studies: A holder of an ordinary diploma in computer studies or equivalent with, a minimum pass at credit level, from an institution recognized by Senate.

Higher Diploma in Computer Studies: A holder of a Higher Diploma in Computer Studies or equivalent, from an institution recognized by Senate.

Bachelor’s Degree: A holder of a Bachelor’s degree from an institution recognized by senate.

EGERTON UNIVERSITY OFFERS APPLIED COMPUTER SCIENCE, AND HERE ARE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission Requirements
The candidates must meet the minimum requirements as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute
Candidates must have passed the K.C.S.E., or equivalent examination with the following minimum grades to be considered:
(a) Mathematics B
(b) B grade in one humanities subject and one language subject.
Holder of a diploma with credits passes and above in Computer Science, Applied Computer Science or equivalent from institutions recognized by Egerton University. Students admitted with Diploma in Computer Science, Applied Computer Science or IT may transfer credits according to Egerton University regulations.
Candidates who have completed Advanced level (A-level) courses with mathematics as one of their major subjects and have obtained at least two principal passes will also be considered.

AT KENYATTA UNIVERSITY, YOU WON’T PURSUE COMPUTER SCIENCE UNLESS YOU MEET THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
A candidate pursuing the B.Sc. degree in Computer Science must meet the minimum University requirements and the minimum entry requirements for the School of Engineering and Technology. In addition the candidate must have attained the following minimum grades at KCSE or equivalent qualifications:

Mathematics B+
Physics B+
Chemistry B
English B-

At Strathmore University, you have to score at least B+ in KCSE for you to be allowed to pursue Computer Science.

AT RIARA UNIVERSITY, THESE ARE THE MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Entry Requirements
All students admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Computer Science must satisfy the minimum requirements of:

(a) A Mean grade of C+ (plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) ) and a minimum of grade C+ in both Mathematics and Physics or Physical Sciences; or its equivalent;
or
(b) A Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (A-Level) with a minimum of two principal passes and a subsidiary and a minimum of a credit pass in both Mathematics and Physics., or its equivalent;
or
(c) A Diploma from a recognized institution; or
(d) A Pre-University certificate from an institution recognized by the Senate, with a
minimum GPA of 2.50
(e) A degree in a science-based discipline from a recognized university by the University Senate.

AT AFRICAN NAZARENE UNIVERSITY, THESE ARE THE MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Overall Grade of C+ in KCSE, C+ in Maths and Physics

Or
Division II (O’ level), 2 principals & a Subsidiary (A’level),
Or
5 credits in IGCSE or equivalent
Or
Minimum GPA of 2.7 from Pre-University
Minimum GPA of 2.3 from Diploma
Or
Credit pass at Diploma level

Exemption Status Exemptions awarded to applicants with a minimum GPA of 2.7.
