KCSE Grade Required to Study Special Needs Education Degree and Diploma in Kenya

Special Needs Education can be pursued at Diploma or Degree level.KCSE grade required to study the course varies from university to university, but the minimum grade for diploma course is C- while a degree course requires a minimum grade of C+

There are several universities and colleges which offer the course and these training institutions have their own minimum entry requirements. We have sampled detailed entry requirements for each university, and they are as follows.

At Kenyatta University, the following are Entry Requirements

Bachelor of Education (Special Needs Education)

Entry Requirements
Entry requirements will be as set out by the senate from time to time. A candidate for the B.ed in Special Needs Education must satisfy the minimum entrance requirement or any of the follow- ing equivalents:
i.    KCSE with an aggregate of C plus (C+).
ii.    Grade C (plain) in KCSE or its equivalent and a Diploma with a minimum of a credit
in special needs education either in Distance Learning or Residential training from any recognized educational institution.
iii.    KCE Division II, or Division III with PI/SI/Diploma, in regular or special education
from any recognised educational institution.
iv.    Mean grade of C- at KCSE and progressed from certificate to Diploma at Kenyatta
University or any other recognized/accredited Institutions.

Mount Kenya University also offers a degree in Special Needs Education. Minimum admission requirements include:

  1.  KCSE with an aggregate of C plus (C+).
    ii.    Grade C (plain) in KCSE or its equivalent and a Diploma with a minimum of a credit
    in special needs education either in Distance Learning or Residential training from any recognized educational institution.
    iii.    KCE Division II, or Division III with PI/SI/Diploma, in regular or special education
    from any recognised educational institution.
    iv.    Mean grade of C- at KCSE and progressed from certificate to Diploma at Kenyatta
    University or any other recognized/accredited Institutions.

KENYA INSTITUTE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION

Kenya Institute of Special Education offers certificate and diploma in Special Needs Education.

To be eligible for certificate courses candidates must be teachers, parents, social workers, caregivers and paramedics or other interested persons with O-level of education.

To be eligible for the Diploma Course in Special Needs Education (SNE) course, applicant may be of any age provided that he/she possesses any one of the following qualifications:

  • Holder of P1 Teacher Training Certificate by training with a minimum of 2 years teaching experience.
  • Holder of P1 Teacher Certificate through promotion by the Ministry of Education after passing through the Teacher Proficiency Course (TPC) course.
  • Holder of Certificate Course in ECDE from KNEC or Ministry of Education DICECE certificate with at least D+ in KCSE or its equivalent and at least 2 years teaching experience.

ST.PAUL’S UNIVERSITY

St.Paul’s University is another private university which offers a degree in Special Needs Education. Entry Requirements are as follows:

Admission Requirements
• KCSE grade C+ with C+ in English or its equivalents,  Or
• A level with two principal passes or its equivalents,  Or
• Diploma holders in related areas such as with at least a Credit Pass.

Duration: 4 Years (8 semesters)

Note: Special Needs Education is regarded as one of the best courses to pursue in Kenya. The completion of training means you can start your own school for physically challenged persons, work for NGOs, Government or international schools. Instead of pursuing general education, you simply enroll for a more marketable program, which is Special Needs Education.
