Urban planning is a marketable course which is offered by a couple of universities in Kenya. Admission requirements for each university/college are as follows:

Categories of Applicants

Candidates shall be eligible for admission into the BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING (Bsc.URP) degree in the School of Architecture and Built Environment with the following qualifications:

KCSE Candidates

The basic admissions requirement shall be the minimum entry requirements set for entry into the public universities, which is at least an average grade of C+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).In addition, candidates must have attained the required minimum grades of C+ at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in the cluster subjects :-

  1. Mathematics
  2. Any Group II
  3. Any Group III
  4. 2nd Group II/ any Group III/ any Group IV/ any Group V

Candidates should have a minimum of two (2) principal passes in Mathematics and Physics and a subsidiary level pass in Chemistry with a credit pass in English at O-Level.

Diploma in Technology Spatial Design and Planning (Dip. Tech SDP) holders from KPTU or any other recognized and equivalent institution.

(d) ANY other EQUIVALENT Qualification subject to the acceptance by the KPTU Academic Board / Senate.

JKUAT Master of Urban Design Admission Requirements

dmission Requirements
3.1    Candidates whose academic background fall into the following categories may be eligible for registration for the degree of Master of Urban Design in the Department of Architecture, JKUAT:

3.1.1)    Either a holder of at least Second Class honours upper division Bachelor of Architecture degree of JKUAT;

3.1.2)    Or a holder of the Bachelor’s degree in either Architecture, Urban Design or Landscape Architecture, or Bachelor of Science or Arts degree in Urban and Regional Planning from any other institution, which is recognized by JKUAT Senate as being of equivalent academic standard;  or

3.1.3)    Or a holder of any other academic qualification(s) acceptable to JKUAT Senate as being equivalent to or higher than those specified in (3.1.1) & (3.1.2) above.

Kenyatta University Bachelor of Science in Spatial Planning Admission Requirements

The minimum university entry mean grade of C+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education and have a minimum grade C+ in the following subjects:
i. Group I: Mathematics
ii. Group I: English/Kiswahili
iii. Group II: Biology/Chemistry/Physics and one other subject from any of the following groups:
iv. Group III: History and Government, Geography, Christian Religious Education/ Islamic Religious Education/Hindu Religious Education
v. Group IV: Home Science, Art and Design, Agriculture, Woodwork, Metalwork, Building Construction, Power Mechanics, Electricity, Drawing and Design, Aviation Technology, Computer Studies
vi. Group V: French, German, Arabic, Kenyan Sign Language, Music, Business Studies.
OR
At least two principle passes in Mathematics or economics and any of the following subjects: Geography, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, History and credit pass in English language at KCE or equivalent examination. OR Approved Diploma recognised by Kenyatta University Senate in land surveying, cartography, GIS/RS, building construction, architecture, applied sciences or related fields with a credit pass may be admitted.

Maasai Mara University Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the minimum general university admission requirements into the Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning, applicants must have obtained:

  1. a)       A mean grade of C+ (C Plus) at KCSE. In addition, the candidate must have scored at least a Grade B (Minus) in at least three of their subjects in Geography, Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Economics, Fine Art, Agriculture, Biology, English, Business Studies, History, Religious studies and Computer Science

OR

  1. b)       ‘A’ level school leavers with a minimum of division three in the Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) with at least credit passes in the subjects listed above and two principal passes in high school;

OR

  1. c)      Those who have not directly qualified for a direct entry for a degree course at high school, but have attained a Diploma in  environmental studies/Architecture/Engineering/Building and Construction from a recognized institution;

OR

  1. d)      Those who attained the minimum B- mean KCSE grade, did not qualify on subject requirements, but have upgraded in relevant subjects listed in (a) above from a recognised institution.

In addition,

  1. e)      Applicants who are Diploma holders in Environmental studies/ Architecture/Engineering/Building and Construction from a recognized institution and have attained a distinction shall be eligible to join the course in Year II.

Applicants who are holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) or Advanced Diploma in environmental studies/Architecture/Engineering/Building and Construction will join the BACHELOR OF URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING course in Year III but will do core course in planning and all studios.

Egerton University MASTER OF ARTS IN URBAN MANAGEMENT Admission Requirements

For admission to this programme, applicants should have at least an Upper Second class division or its equivalent in a field related to urban management from a university recognized by Egerton University Senate. Candidates with a Second Class Degree Lower Division with at least two years’ work experience in urban management related fields will be considered for admission. The department may recommend the admission of students who do not meet the above requirements but show strength in their practical fields that may warrant such admissions.

2.7.2 Regulation on Credit Transfer in a Programme

Egerton University statute 39 (4) governing credit transfers shall apply.

 

2.7.3 Student Assessment Policy /Criteria

Student assessment for the MA in Urban Geography shall be conducted in accordance with the assessment criteria as stipulated in Egerton University Statute 39 (7) of 2013.

2.7.4 Grading

The grading of examination for MA in Urban Management shall be in accordance with Egerton University Statute 39 (f) of 2013.

Course Requirements

Students taking MA in Urban Management shall be required to:

  1. i) Attend classes and participate in field trips as shall apply
  2. ii) Undertake a dissertation in a topic of interest

iii) Have equipment for teaching of practical courses. These shall include laptops and cartographic kit. Students may also be required to have a white aprons and camera.

Maseno University BA Urban & Regional Planning Admission Requirements

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
i. Applicants must satisfy the minimum entry requirements for admission to the University.
ii. Applicants must satisfy the requirements for admissions to the School of Planning and Architecture.

DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME
The duration of the programme shall normally be four academic years.

DEGREE STRUCTURE
Students will take all units from Urban and Regional Planning plus any other approved University courses, provided the student takes a minimum of 56 units and a maximum of 58 units consisting of lecture, studio, workshops, class presentation, fieldwork, supervisions/consultations and professional attachments.

Maseno University MA Urban & Regional Planning Admission Requirements

Applicants should have at least
i. Second Class (Upper Division) degree or equivalent from a recognised university in the following areas:  Agriculture, Architecture, Building Economics, Civil Engineering, Economics, Geography, Land Economics, Sociology, Urban and Regional Planning or any other disciplines related to the ones listed.
ii. Second Class (Lower Division) with proven publication and research in the same specialization areas as in (a) above or a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Planning and Management.
Those applicants with qualifications as in (5.3) above and who have attained a minimum credit score in Postgraduate Diploma in Project Planning and Management will be able to transfer credit for the relevant courses.
