Mbarara University of Science and Technology is located in Uganda and offers certificates, diploma,degree and masters programs as listed below.

Undergraduate programs

  1. a) Bachelor of Science with Education: (Course Duration: 3 years)

At least 2 Principal Passes in Mathematics and Physics or Biology and Chemistry

  1. b) Bachelor of Computer Science (Course Duration: 3 years)

At least 2 Principal Passes one of which MUST be in Mathematics and the other in any of the following subjects; Physics, Chemistry and Economics.

  1. c) Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Course Duration: 5 years)

At least 2 Principal Passes in Biology and Chemistry and at least a Subsidiary Pass in either Physics or Mathematics.

  1. d) Bachelor of Pharmacy (Course Duration: 4 years)

Admission requirements same as (c) above.

  1. e) Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (Course Duration: 4 years)

Admission requirements same as (c) above.

  1. f) Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Course Duration: 4 years)

Admission requirements same as (c) above.

  1. g) Bachelor of Nursing Science (Course Duration: 4 years)

Admission requirements same as in (c) above

Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Course duration is 3 years

  1. h) Bachelor of Information Technology (Course duration: 3 years)

A credit in Mathematics at ‘O’ level (UCE)

At least 2 principal Passes in any ‘A’ level subjects

  1. i) Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (Course Duration: 4 years)

Two advanced level passes in Mathematics and Physics and at least a subsidiary pass in Chemistry or Economics

  1. j) Bachelor of Business Administration ( Course Duration: 3 years)

At least 2 prinicipal passes either in Economics or Mathematics in UACE and a credit in Mathematics at UCE

OR

Holds UDBS or ODBS or HFM Diploma recognised by the University or completed at least level one of CPA, ACCA or CIMA

  1. K) Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences ( Course Duration: 3 Years)

Admission requirements same as in (c) above

  1. l) Bachelor of Accounting and Finance ( Course Duration: 3 Years)

Requirements:
At least 2 principal passes either in Economics or Mathematics in UACE and a credit in Mathematics at UCE for k & l.
OR
Holds UDBS or ODBS or HFM Diploma recognized by the University or must have completed at least level one of CPA, ACCA, or CIMA.

  1. m) Bachelor of Gender and Women Health (Course Duration: 3 Years)
  2. n) Bachelor of Planning and Community Development (Course Duration: 3 Years)

At least 2 principal passes at UACE

At least 2 principal passes at UACE

  1. o) Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology (Duration: 2 years)

An Advanced Certificate of Education or its equivalent.

With a Principal Pass in Biology, Chemistry or Physics

And a pass in Mathematics obtained from Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent.

OR

A Certificate in Science Laboratory Technology with at least a credit pass or its equivalent from a recognized institution plus two years experience.

  1. P) Certificate in Science Laboratory Technology (Duration: 1 year)

A credit in two science subjects i.e. Chemistry and Biology or Physics.

A pass in Mathematics and English.

1.2 COMPLETION PROGRAMMES

  1. a) Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS) Completion Program (Duration: 2 years)

Should;

Be Registered as either Nurses or Midwives or Comprehensive Nurses or Psychiatric Nurses or Paediatric Nurses.
Be registered or eligible for registration with Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
Have been in clinical practice for at least two years after full registration.
Candidates must submit portfolio addressing their achievements of prior learning.  This will be used in the selection process for admission.
Sit and pass an entrance examination in Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology.
Sit for an oral examination (those who pass written examinations)

  1. b) Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) Completion Program (Duration: 2 years)

Should;

Be a holder of Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognised institution.
Must be registered with Allied Health Professionals Council and must have worked for at least two (2) years as Health Laboratory Professional.
Submit two reference reports one from current employer (s) and the other from the institution where the Diploma training was done.
The applicants who meet the above criteria will be required to sit for an entrance examination consisting of three written papers in (1) Microbiology, (2) Clinical Chemistry, Biochemistryand Histopathology, (3) Haematology, Blood Transfusion which must be passed individually.

  1. c) Diploma in Counselling (Duration: 2 years)

Should;

Should have obtained 6 credits at the same sitting in the Uganda Certificate of Education

Or at least two principal level passes in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent
Or be registered Nurses/Midwives
Or holders of Diploma from a recognized Paramedical School
All applicants are required to be working with an institution or NGO where Counselling is part of their work and must have held that position for at least two years.

Postgraduate

  1. Institute of Interdsciplinary Training and Research
  2. a) Postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies (offered evening only)
  3. b) M.A in Development Studies

A candidate must hold a good Bachelors’ degree in any development related discipline.  A postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies from Mbarara University of science and Technology will be an added advantage.

  1. c) M.A in Local Goverance and Planning

A candidate must hold a good Bachelors’ degree in any development related discipline.  A postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies from Mbarara University of science and Technology will be an added advantage.

  1. Institute of Management Sciences
  2. a) Master of Business Administration
    A candidate must hold a good Bachelors’ degree.
    Have 2 years of postgraduate work experience.
    Passing the Graduate Admissions Test (GAT) of Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
  3. Faculty of Science
  4. a) Master of Science in Biology

A candidate must have an Honours degree of at least Second Class Lower Division from a recognized University in Botany/Zoology/Ethnobotany/Forestry/Agriculture/Veterinary Medicine.

Have an undergraduate  dissertation in areas especially related to Biology for the non Botany/Ethnobotany applicants.

Applicants of Zoology/Botany who offered 3:2:2 will have an added advantage.

  1. b) Master of Science in Mathematics

candidate must have an Honours degree of at least Second Class-Lower Division from a recognized University majoring in Mathematics

  1. c) Master of Science in Physics

candidate must have an Honours degree of at least Second Class-Lower Division from a recognized University majoring in Physics

  1. d) Master of Science in Chemistry

candidate must have an Honours degree of at least Second Class-Lower Division from a recognized University majoring in Chemistry

  1. e) Master of Education (Educational Administration and Planning)
  2. f) Master of Education (Educational Psychology)
  3. g) Master of Education (Curruculum and Instruction)

  1. Faculty of Medicine

(Course duration for a,b,c and d below is 2 years)

  1. a) Master of Science in Anatomy
  2. b) Master of Science in Physiology
  3. c) Master of Science in Pharmacology
  4. d) Masters of Public Health (MPH)
  5. e) Master of Science in Microbiology
  6. f) Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Science
  7. g) Master of Nursing Science

Requirements for (a, b, c, d, e and f) above  A good Bachelors’ degree in Medicine and Surgery or its equivalent form a recognized University, a Bachelor in Health Sciences i.e. Human Medicine and Veterinary, Dentistry or Nursing and at least 2 years of relevant field experience, Social Science or any other health related field, a degree in Social Sciences e.g Social work, Sociology, Economics, Demography with at least two years or relevant field experience, a degree in the Biological Sciences such as Statistics, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Laboratory Sciences and at least two years of relevant field experience

  6. j)  Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology
  7. k) Master of Medicine in Obstetrics/Gynaecology
  8. l)  Master of Medicine in Community Practice/Family Medicine
  9. m) Master of Medicine in Ear, Nose and Throat
  10. n) Master of Medicine in Radiology
  11. o) Master of Medicine in Psychiatry

Requirements for (e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m and n) above

Be a holder of MBChB or its equivalent and should be registered with Uganda Medical & Dental Practitioners Council.

Have a recent certificate of good standing issued to the candidate by the registering authority.

Documentary evidence of Internship training indicating the disciplines and dates

Evidence of professional experience in a recognized institution for at least 2 years since full registration.

Tuition

  1. Institute of Computer Science
  2. a) Master of Science in Information Systems

A candidate must hold a good Bachelors’ degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Information Technology.

  1. b) Master of Science in Health Information Technology (MSc.HIT)

Admission Requirements:

  • A candidate must have a degree in health care related field e.g. Medicine, Nursing or Statistics,

Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Information Technology, Pharmacy, Dentistry from a recognized institution.
