KCSE Grade Required To Study Journalism and Mass Communication in Kenya

Journalism and Mass Communication is one of the best careers in Kenya. The course, compared to popular courses like Medicine and Law, does not require high grades in KCSE,a C+ is enough to enroll for the program at any public university in Kenya.

If you are aiming at pursuing journalism at a public university under regular program, a B+ and above will get you opportunity at the University of Nairobi or Maseno University. For a parallel program, you need at least a C+ for a general grade and at least a C for English and Kiswahili.

The best institution to pursue a diploma in Journalism and mass communication is Kenya Institute of Mass Communication.The university of Nairobi,Daystar University,Maseno University ,Kenyatta University and USIU are the best universities to pursue your degree programs.

At the University of Nairobi, these are the entry requirements for the course:

  1. a) Candidates must satisfy the minimum University entry requirements.
  2. b) Subject to regulation (a) above, eligible candidates for the Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies shall be:
  3. i) Holders of KCSE with a mean grade of C+ and a minimum of C+ in English or Kiswahili or its equivalent.

 

  1. ii) Holders of the KCSE with a minimum aggregate of C plain or equivalent; or KCE Division II or equivalent; or EACE Division II or equivalent, with a minimum of C+ in English or Kiswahili– all of these candidates MUST ALSO have a Diploma or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution.

 

iii)              Holder of KCSE with C plain or equivalent, with a minimum of C+ in English or Kiswahili. In addition these candidates MUST ALSO have a credit and a Diploma or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution.

 

  1. iv) Holder of the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) with a minimum of two (2) Principal passes and one subsidiary pass, and a minimum of a credit pass in English or Kiswahili at the KCE level.

 

  1. v) Holder of a degree from a recognised University or its equivalent.

At Daystar University, these are the entry requirements

To join Daystar Bachelor’s programme a candidate needs a C+ (plus) and above in KCSE or, 5 Credits in IGCSE;

Or 2 Principal passes in ‘A’ level or Division 2 in GCE

Or 50% from other countries using percentages;

Or CPA (K) entry to commerce degree.

At USIU,these are the minimum entry requirements for journalism and mass communication

To join USIU Bachelor’s programme a candidate needs a C+ (plus) and above in KCSE or, 5 Credits in IGCSE

At Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, here are the minimum entry requirements

All applications must be accompanied with copies of relevant certificates, national Identity Card.
Entry Requirements for Diploma Courses

For KIMC examined diplomas a minimum of Grade C plain attained at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) or equivalent is required. In addition, prospective applicants are expected to meet specific requirements for each of the courses offered.
For Kenya National Exanimation Council (KNEC) examined diploma a minimum of Grade C minus attained at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) or equivalent is required. In addition, prospective applicants are expected to meet specific requirements for each of the courses as may be specified from time to time by the examining body.
Entry Requirements for Certificate Courses
For all KIMC certificates a minimum of Grade C minus attained at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) or equivalent is required. In addition, prospective applicants are expected to meet specific requirements for each of the courses offered.

Kenyatta University specifies the following as minimum requirement for Journalism and Mass Communication

At JKUAT, these are the entry requirements

 

ENTRY CRITERIA
Candidates wishing to study for the Bachelor of Commerce Degree must satisfy the minimum University and SHRD requirements for admission.
EITHER

Candidates wishing to study for the Bachelor of Communication must satisfy the minimum University and SHRD requirements for admission.

– Be a holder of KCSE (or equivalent examination) certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+ and a minimum of C in both Mathematics and English or Kiswahili. OR

– Be a holder of KCE Division II with credit pass in both Mathematics and English/Kiswahili. OR

– Be a holder of KACE certificate with a minimum of two principal passes and subsidiary pass and a minimum of credit pass in Mathematics at KCE. OR

– Be a holder of Diploma in Mass Communication with minimum of credit pass from JKUAT or from an institution recognised by the University Senate. OR

– Be a holder of any other qualification accepted by the University Senate as equivalent to any of the above.

Candidates who hold a diploma with credit pass (see 2.4 above) may, at the discretion of the University Senate, be exempted from Semester I and Semester II of Year I. However, they must pass the three university core units in order to graduate. In addition, a student registered in another University recognized by the Senate may be allowed to transfer credit to the programme
