Over 22,500 Kenyan graduates showed up for an interview at EKA Hotel Nairobi, shocking interviewers and visitors at the hotel. A total of 5 vacancies had been advertised and the company recruiting did not anticipate a huge turnout. However, when the day arrived, job seekers started streaming in as early as 5 am and by 8 am the hotel was filled to capacity, some of the job seekers were forced sit outside due to lack of space.
The Hotel management was forced to close the door for other graduates who were later told to go home and wait for further communication.
Following the incident, EKA hotel narrated what had transpired. Here is the statement from the hotel:
“Good afternoon All,
Greetings from Eka Hotel.
We are highly overwhelmed by all your messages, tags and mentions following a trending image and video in the last day.
We would like to clarify reports that Eka Hotel has advertised for 5 vacancies are not true. Contrary to these reports, it is one of our clients, a recruitment agency that was conducting interviews from the hotel seeking quite some more. Whereas large numbers were not anticipated both by the Hotel and the agency, our security team moved in swiftly to control the situation calmly and organised, which once again reminds us of the joblessness of young people in our beloved country and the dire employment situtation. We truly empathize with them and hope that they find occupation soon.
At this point we would like to thank everyone once again, especially all our guest who were in the hotel at the time for their understanding and sincerely apologize for any inconveniences caused.
Lastly, we would like to invite you to enjoy our Thai cuisine week which starts tomorrow, Monday the 1st of July 2019. Time to treat your taste buds to a culinary journey. Visit our website for more offers and information.
Thank you once again and best wishes for the new month of July ahead.
Eka Hotel”
