Research Manager

Department: Strathmore Law School – Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT)
Reporting to: Director, CIPIT 
Basic job Summary: The Research Manager will be primarily responsible for the implementation, coordination, evaluation, communication and/or management of research at CIPIT. They will oversee the execution of the basic investigative tasks of the research projects, contributing to the ongoing management, progress evaluation, and information dissemination relating to the projects.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Project Management

  • Training, guiding, and supervising interns and research staff.
  • Plan and arrange meetings with research subjects, focus groups, teleconferences and other research activities; takes and prepares minutes.
  • Collate and organize material for research papers, manuscripts, interim progress or final reports, articles or other documents for publication, presentation or submission to funding agencies, steering groups, etc.
  • Assist the research staff with authoring relevant sections of manuscripts, and facilitate submission of study results, conference abstracts and preparation of posters and oral presentations journal articles, for publications.
  • Assist in the organization of and development of material for, and implements research coordination events including conferences, seminars and workshops amongst project investigators and stakeholders.
  • Attend and contribute to relevant research and research dissemination meetings. 

Project preparation

  • Conduct detailed operational preparation of research project including schedules, progress, coordination, deliverables, and milestones of the project.
  • Collaborate in development of new techniques and research instruments.
  • Develop and assess qualitative and quantitative research instruments (i.e. structured interviews, questionnaires, document/chart review matrix, etc.), with a strong understanding of the requirements of valid, reliable and feasible application in onsite, on‐line and field settings.
  • Refine and adapt research methodologies and research instruments as the project progresses in light of results being obtained and of effectiveness of project implementation, as directed by the Project Investigator or senior research staff.
  • Write, edit and submit protocols and other required research documentation for research ethics and regulatory matters.
  • Conduct research project activities requiring a higher level of autonomy, training or skill.
  • Contribute to production of critical reviews or editions.
  • Track/monitor/provide justification for all financial aspects of the project ensuring accurate and timely reporting (including, if required, travel and in kind contributions of Principal Investigator and all other partners).

Data Analysis and Interpretation

  • Oversee the execution of all phases of data analysis plan(s) and contributes to components currently being developed.
  • Interpret data, information and /or experimental and analytical results to identify key issues, to understand trends, characteristics and tendencies and to generate conclusions.
  • Conduct sophisticated and/or advanced data analyses which may require specialized expertise and experience and interprets results.
  • Inform Principal Investigator of project results, analyses, and interpretation, including thoughts on their impact on the conduct of the project so that appropriate adjustments can be made as the work progresses.

Writing up and submitting research results for publication or presentation, and other duties

  • Contribute to the drafting and submitting of papers to peer reviewed journals/conferences/workshops and of grant proposals and applications.
  • Oversee the summarization in written format (i.e. report suitable for submission to client and/or funding agency) information relating to project design, implementation, evolution and findings.
  • Promote application and impact of research work and results.
  • Summarize results in written format suitable for consumption by lay audiences unfamiliar with statistical techniques and terminology.
  • Summarize results in written format understandable by the “educated professional” (i.e. college–‐educated individual).
  • Manage the development and annual publication of the CIPIT peer-reviewed academic journal.
  • Assist the Director, CIPIT, in supervising project management, intern management, and communications.
  • Assist with any other duties required by the research project or management. 

Minimum Requirements:

Core qualifications

  • PhD in Law, Political Science, Economics, or related field , or;
  • Masters in Law, Political Science, Economics, or related field with demonstrated excellence in the job criteria

Other qualifications

  • Demonstrated extensive experience in research
  • Familiarity with qualitative research methodologies and their applications.
  • Familiarity with quantitative research methods, statistics and their applications.
  • Experience with literature searches and retrievals using electronic database.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, to work under pressure, to effectively manage overlapping duties and to meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational, time management, coordination and facilitation skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently, adapt rapidly to change and to demonstrate flexibility and initiative.
  • Sound judgement in applying scientific principles & predicting/preventing problems.

  • Advanced written and verbal skills in English demonstrated through publications and presentations.

Assistant Incubation Manager

Department: @iLabAfrica Research Centre
Reporting to: Incubation Manager 
Basic job Summary: To manage existing incubation programs and develop new ones that are strategic to the incubator’s competitiveness, effectiveness and efficiency.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Startup Support:
    • Day-to-day contact and mentoring support to the startups in @IBIZAFRICA’s portfolio.
    • Actively participate in Pitch Fridays and other support programs for startups
    • Advise on every stage of the startup lifecycle, from go-to-market strategy, customer acquisition, monetization, biz dev and beyond.
    • Set KPIs with the teams and closely track to ensure continual progression, revenue, user growth, etc., and compile monthly KPI reporting to @IBIZAFRICA management team.
    • Oversee legal and compliance processes for portfolio companies.
    • Preparation and participation in monthly board meetings with @IBIZAFRICA management team.
    • Maintain contact and frequently get feedback from graduated startups.
  2. Programs Development-Constantly develop, test and implement new programs that boost the incubator’s sustainability and competitiveness.
  3. Programs Management-Frequently lead the implementation of various incubator programs.
  4. Partnerships Development-
    • Lead business development efforts and establishing relationships across industries and sectors to source potential partners and sponsors for the incubator.
  5. Continually build strong ties with relevant external stakeholders, including venture investors, corporates, banks, telcos, foundations, government, press and others in the local tech ecosystem.
  6. Work closely with @IBIZAFRICA’s Director on identifying priorities and executing.
  7. Continually work to renew and keep partnerships active.
  8. Pipeline and Exit Management-
    • Implement policies and procedures that enable the incubator to attract its targeted applicants, investors and partners.
    • Implement policies and procedures that enable iBizAfrica to manage the exit of startups after end of incubation period.
  9. Ambassador: Serve as the local ambassador and face of @IBIZAFRICA in Nairobi (speaking opportunities at industry conferences and panels, press interviews as needed, and attending tech ecosystem events.
  10. Quality Assurance-
    • Document and periodically review procedures for selection, incubation and exit of incubator applicants to maintain high standards.
    • Document and periodically review incubation program milestones with clear timelines, budget and deadlines.
    • Consistently monitor activities and outcomes of the incubator to ensure program objectives and goals are reached.
    • Document and periodically review training program curricula, mentorship and coaching sessions.
    • Revise, review and maintain policies and procedures pertaining to incubator operations.
    • Document and implement policies and procedures (performance measures) to measure effectiveness of the incubator.
    • Frequently and consistently solicit feedback from incubator program participants’ (current and past) and incubator stake holders (University, investors, sponsors and partners) to inform program and operational improvements.
    • Document and profile success stories from the incubator.
  11. Communication
    • Develop and maintain a monthly newsletter highlighting main activities and highlights from the incubator.
    • Compile and write the incubator’s annual report highlighting key achievements, activities and success stories.
  12. Work closely with the incubator manager and administrative staff to achieve the goals of the incubation program.
  13. Any other relevant duties that may be assigned by the director of iBizAfrica. 

Minimum Requirements:

Core qualifications

  • An under graduate degree in a related filed
  • At least one-year experience in a management position.
  • Previous work experience at a startup or incubator is an added advantage.
  • Up to date with current trends in startup support, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Experience in business modelling and startup development. Ideal if you’ve taken a new product from idea to launch.
  • Understanding the local startup landscape. You’re already plugged in / know your way around the Nairobi tech ecosystem.
  • Technical affinity.
  • Coaching experience. Willingness to drive community growth (both internally and externally in the Kenyan tech ecosystem)

Executive Director

Department: Strathmore University Foundation (SUF)
Reporting to: SUF Board of Directors
Basic job Summary: The Executive Director will provide leadership for the development, execution, administration, and management of all functions and matters relating to fund raising, their support services, and relations with relevant stakeholders to meet the fundraising needs of Strathmore University.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Provide overall leadership, administration and development of the Foundation
  2. In consultation with all relevant stakeholders, provide leadership and direction for the design, development and implementation of the institutional fundraising and endowment strategies
  3. Establish through consultation with the Management, annual fund raising goals and objectives and develop and implement a plan for University fund raising with clear delineation of roles and responsibilities, quantifiable metrics, and targets for productivity
  4. Establish and maintain productive relationships with the private and corporate business community.
  5. Manage a personal portfolio of major and principal gift prospects, including responsibilities for personal cultivation, solicitation, closing of commitments, and stewardship, and involving internal and volunteer partners wherever appropriate
  6. Work in collaboration with relevant Strathmore University (SU) communities to understand the programs and priorities across the University and facilitate the translation of those priorities into fundraising and engagement opportunities for the maximum benefit of SU
  7. Work in collaboration with Strathmore University Alumni in programs seeking to involve alumni in advancing the University’s fundraising priorities and in strengthening alumni relationships
  8. Work collaboratively with the Strathmore University Marketing and Communications teams in the design, development, and implementation of a University- wide Strategic Marketing and Communications Plan to promote the SUF mission, image, events, and activities and to ensure consistency in information delivered to all stakeholders
  9. Engage Strathmore University units to enhance the culture of fundraising and philanthropy
  10. Ensure that SUF policies and practices comply with all state laws, regulatory requirements, Strathmore University policy and statutes and donor instructions

Minimum Requirements:

Core Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) qualification would be an added advantage
  • A minimum of eight (8) years successful experience in leading and supervising at least one of the following functions: business development, campaign management, annual giving programs, corporate foundation relations, alumni relations, grants or scholarship soliciting and management; preferably in a higher education or not-for-profit environment.
  • Record of effective and innovative leadership in fundraising programs development and strong fiscal management linking resource allocation to planning and priorities (including data-driven decision-making).
  • Experience in planning, implementing, managing and concluding major fundraising campaigns.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the legal and ethical aspects of fundraising and obligations to donors and their intents as well as of proper alignment with University goals, priorities, and decisions.
  • Wealth of contacts in local, international, non-profit, corporate, education and public and private sectors
  • An in-depth knowledge of the current organizational and financial issues that face higher education in general, and especially those in Africa.
