University of Malawi Kamuzu College of Nursing offers courses related to nursing. Below are courses offered at the college, entry requirements and qualifications.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing & Midwifery (Integrated Program)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have MSCE or its equivalent with 6 credits that should include credits in Mathematics, Physical Science, Biology and English (+ any other 2 credits)

DURATION The integrated program has a duration of 2 years. 

DIRECT ENTRY PROGRAMS

  1. Bachelor of Science in Adult Health Nursing
  2. Bachelor of Science in Child Health Nursing
  3. Bachelor of Science in Community Health Nursing
  4. Bachelor of Science in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing
  5. Bachelor of Science in Midwifery.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

DURATION All Direct entry programs have a duration of 4 years.

MATURE ENTRY PROGRAMS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

An applicant must have the following qualifications;

  • MSCE/O-Level credits in Biology, Physical Science, English and Mathematics.
  • University diploma in Nursing.
  • Be a Registered Nurse/ Midwife.
  • In addition, all candidates are expected to have at least 2 years of work experience in either nursing or midwifery at RN level.
  • Applicants with distinction and credit passes in their previous academic records shall have an added advantage.

DURATION All programs listed have a duration of 2 years each.

University Certificate in Midwifery

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from a recognised institution

DURATION This program runs for a year

Master of Science in Adult Health Nursing

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of 2 years relevant working experience after obtaining any of the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Adult Health Nursing

Master of Science Programs (MSc)

Master of Science in Adult Health Nursing

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of 2 years relevant working experience after obtaining any of the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Adult Health Nursing

Master of Science Degree in Child Health Nursing

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 2 years relevant working experience after obtaining any of the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing plus University Certificate in Midwifery.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Child Health Nursing

Master of Science Degree in Community Health Nursing

Master of Science Degree in Midwifery

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 2 years relevant working experience after obtaining any of the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and University Certificate in Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Midwifery

Master of Science Degree in Nursing and Midwifery Education

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 3 years of clinical nursing experience and be currently working in a nursing education institution or be willing to be deployed to a CHAM nursing college after successful completion of the programme plus any of the following qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing Education
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing plus University Certificate in Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and Midwifery

Master of Science Degree in Reproductive Health

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 2 years relevant working experience after obtaining any of the following qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing plus University Certificate in Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Clinical Medicine

Doctor of Philosophy Programs (PhD)

  1. PhD in Interprofessional Health Care Leadership.
  2. PhD in Nursing.
  3. PhD in Midwifery.

DURATION The PhD programs have a duration of 4 years each.

Entry Requirements

The applicant must have a background in nursing in addition to the individual requirements of the specific PhD program he/she is applying for

 

  • PhD in Inter-professional Health Care Leadership: The applicant must also have a Master of Science degree in Nursing, Child Health Nursing or other health-related programs (e.g. Master’s in Public Health).
  • PhD in Midwifery: The applicant must have a minimum of two years’ work experience after obtaining a Masters degree in a relevant field. The applicant must also have a background in Midwifery with the following:
    • A Master of Science Degree in Midwifery, Child Health Nursing or other health-related programs (e.g. Master’s in Public Health).
  • PhD in Nursing: The applicant must have a minimum of two years’ work experience after obtaining a Masters  degree in a relevant field or have
    • A Master of Science degree in Nursing and or Midwifery or other health-related programs (e.g. Masters in Clinical Medicine, Masters in Public Health).
    • A minimum of two years’ work experience after Master’s Degree in a relevant field.

Other Requirements

The following items should be submitted together with the application form

  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Official transcripts of graduate and postgraduate degrees.
  • References from one academic and two traceable professional referees attesting to the applicant’s academic and professional ability and potential.
  • Personal goal statement that is congruent with the program goals.
  • Description of research interest area that is congruent with the Malawi Health Research agenda.
  • A sample of scholarly work-preferably published work.

NOTE The documents listed above must be duly certified as true copies of the originals by a recognized Commissioner of Oaths.

Applicants are also required to include the following items in their application:

  • Original proof of availability of funds for training i.e. official sponsorship letter or bank statements of the applicant.
  • Copy of a bank deposit slip showing the name of the applicant and the amount of application fee paid.
  • Official reference letter(s) from the current and/or previous employer(s) showing proof of at least 2 years relevant work experience.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

Qualifying candidates should obtain application forms from the registry at both Lilongwe and Blantyre campuses or download them from www.kcn.unima.mw

All applicants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of MK14,000.00 for all Malawian applicants and $100.00 for all International applicants. The application fees must be deposited to KCN Main Account Number 321068, National Bank, Lilongwe Branch.

NOTE Details of fees requirements for each program can be obtained from the Registrar’s office.

MASTERS PROGRAMMES APPLICATION

Additional Requirements

  • Academic transcripts
  • Copies of academic certificates
  • Copies of current professional registration certificates (from Nurses & Midwives council or Medical Council)
  • Reference letters (two academic and one professional)
  • A non-refundable application fee of MK12, 000.00 for Malawians and US $70.00 for non – Malawians
  • Proof of scholarship i.e. support letter from the sponsor.

NOTE Applicants who will not pay their tuition fees within the first two weeks will be withdrawn from the program.
