  1. Mount Kenya University Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Admission Requirements
  • KCSE or equivalent certificate with a minimum of C+ and grade C (plain) in at least 3 of the the following subjects; Biology/Chemistry, English/Kiswahili, Home Science and Humanities  or similar grades in an equivalent examination approved by the University Senate in liaison with CHE.  Or.
  • KACE or equivalent Certificate with a minimum of two principal passes and O level Credit in Geography/ History / Biology.     Or
  • Diploma in relevant disciplines in the field of hospitality from an institution recognized by the University Senate in liaison with CHE and which may be eligible for credit transfers on application as spelt out by the University’s credit transfer policy.

   Entry via University Bridging
A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a minimum of C+ and lacking clusters subjects, Geography / History / Biology as in (i) above.  The Candidate must score at least a C plain in the subject he/she is bridging in as in (i) above;

A holder of KACE certificate or equivalent with minimum of two principles and lacking O level clusters subject grades as in (ii) above.  The candidate must score in the subject in which he/she is bridging in as 2.7.1.1 (ii)

Entry via Pre-university Programme
A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a mean aggregate of C (plain) with C (plain) in Geography / History / Biology

Exemptions and credit transfers
A maximum of 15 units can be transferred for relevant units covered at degree or diploma level whose attainment is grade B and above.
Evidence supporting the application should include certified academic transcripts, certificates and a letter from the relevant registrar or authority
Application for credit transfer will not be allowed three (3) weeks after the start of the semester / trimester unless granted permission by the University Senate .
The University reserves the right to administer an appropriate test, through the relevant Department in order to determine whether exemption should be granted.

Exemption
The following conditions should be met in seeking an exemption for a particular subject:

  1. The applicant shall pay a non-refundable credit transfer/exemption fee as determined by the School Board and approved by the Senate.
  2. A formal application on a prescribed form should be lodged with the Dean of School.
  3. The application should include justification and documentary support for the exemption to be considered.
  4. The applicant must have passed the final examinations for the year in which the subject to be exempted was examined.
  5. The School Board may require the applicant to sit an exemption examination.

Entry Requirements

Candidates shall be eligible for admission into the Bachelor of Science in Institutional Catering and Accommodation Management in the following categories:

KCSE Candidates

The basic admission requirement shall be the minimum entry requirements set for entry into the public universities, which is at least an average grade of C+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

In addition, candidates are expected to have obtained at least a grade C+ in each of the cluster subjects in following cluster of subjects in KCSE examinations:

Cluster Subjects

  1. JKUAT B. Sc. Food Service and Hospitality Management Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements

1.1.    A candidate wishing to be admitted into the B.Sc. degree programme in Food Service and Hospitality Management must satisfy the minimum University entry requirements and Faculty of Agriculture regulations.

All candidates admitted to the degree programme of Bachelor of Catering and Hotel

Management BCHM. must satisfy the minimum common entrance requirements as

stipulated by the Egerton University Statutes. EITHER KCSE certificate with a minimum

aggregate of C+ and a minimum of C in both Mathematics and English/Kiswahili. OR 4.2

Be a holder of KACE certificate with a minimum of two principal passes and subsidiary

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Tourism management)

Entry Requirements
Candidates must satisfy the minimum entry requirements for PhD of Kenyatta University. The
general regulations of all PhDs in the School of Hospitality and Tourism shall apply. In order to qualify for admission for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree of Kenyatta University, the candidates must have the following academic and professional requirements:-

  1. Candidates must have a Bachelors Degree in Tourism, Hospitality or any other related field of Kenyatta University or a recognized institution by the Kenyatta University Senate.
  2. Candidates must have a Masters Degree in Tourism, Hospitality or related field from Kenyatta University or a recognized institution by the Kenyatta University senate. In addition, the applicants must have taken a minimum of 10 course units with an average of a B and above and the research must be by thesis.
  3. Candidates must have proven research ability and have successfully defended a concept paper at the department.

MASTER OF SCIENCE (TOURISM MANAGEMENT)

 Entry Requirements
The common regulations for all Masters Degrees in the University shall apply. The common
regulations for all Masters Degrees in the School hospitality and tourism shall apply.
The following shall be eligible for registration for a Masters degree in Tourism Management:

  1. A holder of Bachelor of Science (Upper Second Honors and above) degree in Tourism Management and related fields.
  2. Those with Second Class (Lower Division) may be considered on condition that they have Grade “C” and above in units relevant to their areas of specialization.

DIPLOMA (TOURISM MANAGEMENT)

 Entry Requirements

  1. Candidates must satisfy the minimum entry requirements of Kenyatta University for Diploma courses.
  2. Candidates must have a minimum of grade of C in KCSE examinations.
  3. Candidates must have done any two (2) of the following subjects at KCSE and passed with a minimum grade of C – (minus) in each: Biology/Biological Sciences; Geography/ History; Business Education/Computer Applications; English/Foreign Language
  4. Mean grade C-(minus) at KCSE with a Certificate in a field related to tourism from a recognized Institution and two (2) years of relevant experience.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT (TOURISM)

Entry Requirements

  1. Candidates must satisfy the minimum entry requirements of Kenyatta University.
  2. Candidates must have C+ (C Plus) at KCSE or equivalent in any three (3) of the following subjects: Biology/Biological Sciences; Chemistry/Physical Sciences/ Physics/Mathematics; Home Science; English/Kiswahili/Foreign Language; Geography/History; Business Studies/ Commerce/Economics/ Agriculture

In addition to satisfying the minimum admission requirement for Kisii University, the candidates should obtain at least grade C in Mathematics, C+ in Biology or B- in Biological Sciences, C in Chemistry, B- in Geography or History and Government, and at least C+ in English or Kiswahili at K.S.C.E.
